Shimla, altitude about 2400m and very clean and tidy, so much so, that there is a 500r fine for littering, spitting,smoking in public and feeding the monkey. In Shimla they don t have pigeons to shit on you, they have monkeys to throw anything ballistic they can get hold of. It is quite a charming place with quaint names like the Ridge, the Mall, Christchurch, Viceregal Lodge, where Lord Louis Mountbatten used to hang out when he was the last Viceroy of India. The highest(and flattest) point is the Ridge, which when it snows is used as public skating rink. On the Ridge you will find a victorian style post office(oops GPO, as they call it over here), although the interior seems to be more formica and MDF, than himalayan cedar. The town hall, police station, tourist dpartment are all to be found on the Ridge as well as a curious meeting place for youngsters, called oddly enough Scandal Point (dont ask me look it up on google). Just below the ridge is the winding road called the Mall, this road snakes its way east to west rising up to the Ridge( the Ridge is pedestrian only) and then making its way down the other side again to the main road and bus station.But for me the most enchanting part was Kipling s Shimla, which is the labyrinth of hundreds of small businesses, clinging to the hillside as by some mystic magnetism. It was quite possible that it was in one of these haunts where the Colonel spymaster sent the young Kim, to begin his apprentiship with the old arab shopkeeper in the art of "this very, noble Great Game". Any I must go and locate my two nepalese porters (see the photo), tweedle dee and tweedledum as tomorrow Im off on a five hour trip to Mandi, which lies on the river Beas.
Shimla, altitude aproximadamente a 2400m. muy limpio y pulcro( coje nota Orozco) . Lo toman tan en serio que hay una multa de 500r por tirar lixo escupir, fumar en publico y dar de comer a los monos. En Shimla, no tienen palomas para cagarte encima, tienen monos para lanzarte todo tipo de objeto balistico. Es un sitio muy cursy. Con nombres muy cursys como el Ridge, el Mall,Christchurch y el Viceregal Lodge donde vivio Lord Loius Mountbatten, cuando fue el ultimo Vicerey de India. La parte mas alta y plana de Shimla se llama el Ridge, que se convierte en pista de patinaje cuando caen las nieves. En el Ridge daras encotrada una oficina de correos victoriana ( aunque me temo que el interior es mas de formica y aluminio que de cedro himalayo. El ayuntamiento, policia y oficina de turismo, tambien se encuentran en el Ridge como punto de encuentro de jovenes que se llama Scandal Point( no me preguntes. Busca en google) Justo debajo del Ridge se encuentra un larga y serpenteante carretera que se llama el Mall que sube y baja de este a oeste hasta el Ridge ,ya que es peatonal y bajando otra vez a la carretera principal y estacion de buses. Pero para mi, la parte mas encantadora de era la Shimla de Kipling, que es el labirinto de cientos de negocios pequenos, que cuelgan de la ladera como si fuese un magnetismo mystico. Podia ser en unos de estos antros donde el Coronel, jefe de espionaje mando al pequeno Kim a empezar su entrenamiento con el viejo, tendero "en ese muy,noble Gran Juego.Ahora tengo que localizar mis hombrecillos nepaleses, pues manana salgo cedo en un viaje de cinco horas a Mandi, que queda sobre el rio Beas.
